Michael Pilbrow (Strategic Development Group)

After a disaster, hearing stories is a valuable way to learn from people in a traumatised rural community at the heart of a recovery effort. Strategic Development Group worked with the Business Council of Cooperatives and Mutuals to understand the contribution of cooperatives in recent bushfire, cyclone and floods. We established the crucial role often overlooked that cooperatives play due to their social connections, high levels of trust, risk pooling and efficient communication avenues (see https://coopfarming.coop/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Primary-producer-co-operatives-the-beating-heart-of-community-resilience-and-recovery.pdf). We recommend that cooperatives deserve a seat at the table with government and others in building community resilience and preparing for future disasters.
